Writer: Keishia Dennis-SouthwardKeishia Dennis-Southward

The keto diet has been around for a while but it recently gained popularity. The keto diet is a low-carb, high-fat diet that has been shown to have a number of health benefits, including weight loss, improved mental clarity, and decreased inflammation. The keto diet has also been shown to be helpful for people with certain health conditions, such as epilepsy and type 2 diabetes. If you are thinking of starting the keto diet, it is important to consult with your doctor first to make sure it is the right choice for you. This post provides an overview of the keto diet and its health benefits, as well as some tips for following the diet. I am researching everything I can to try to find something that works for me to get myself healthier and more physically fit. I watch on TikTok and saw a video of someone talking about being on the keto diet. Which got me wondering what exactly is the keto diet and here we are so I'm going to share what I have learned.

How Does the Keto Diet Work?

The diet was first developed in the 1920s as a treatment for epilepsy patients who weren't responding well to medication. Since then, research has shown that keto diets can have many health benefits. The keto diet helps you burn fat because it changes your body's fuel source from carbohydrates (which are broken down into glucose) and turns it into ketones instead. Ketones are made by converting fat or fatty acids into molecules called ketones which can then be used as an energy source by your body instead of glucose. It's called "ketosis", which occurs when there isn't enough insulin in the body to use glucose as energy, so your body switches to burning fat instead. If your goal in using the keto diet to lose weight is to force your body into this metabolic state. With this type of diet you don’t do it through starvation of calories but starvation of carbohydrates.

Keto diet health benefits

If you're wondering why this eating plan is taking over the world, here's a list of key Keto diet health benefits:

  • It's a great way to lose weight. The Keto diet is a low-carb, high-fat diet that forces your body to burn fat as an energy source instead of carbs. This can result in significant weight loss, especially if you combine it with exercise (like I plan to do).

  • It can help lower blood sugar and insulin levels. High levels of insulin can be a major contributor to weight gain, so by lowering insulin levels through a low carb diet, you may be able to reduce your risk for diabetes and heart disease.

  • The keto diet can help manage epilepsy and other neurological conditions. A ketogenic diet has been shown effective for managing some types of epilepsy in children as well as adults who have had their seizures controlled by medication for years but still suffer from uncontrolled seizures.

How to Follow the Keto Diet

it wasn't until the 1970s when researchers began studying how effective low-carb diets were for losing weight, because they are effective at decreasing hunger levels and causing people to consume fewer calories per day than they would on traditional low-fat diets. Following such a strict, restrictive eating plan isn't easy — especially when you're just starting out. So here are five tips that will help you stick to the keto diet:

  1. Don't obsess over macros

  2. Focus on the quality of your food

  3. Embrace fat

  4. Eat protein-rich foods

  5. Keep track of what you eat

Is the keto diet safe?

There is a lot of debate surrounding the keto diet and its safety. Some people claim that the diet is unsafe and that it can lead to health problems like kidney stones and difficulty accessing essential nutrients. However, other people swear by the keto diet and claim that it has helped them lose weight and improve their health.

So, what is the truth? Is the keto diet safe? The answer is that it depends. The keto diet may not be right for everyone, but if you do your research and speak with your doctor, you may be able to safely follow the diet.

Conclusion

There's no question that the ketogenic diet is one of the most popular fad diets around. You see it everywhere: celebrities, models and fitness gurus swearing by it. There are many reasons people try keto diets: They want to lose weight, improve their overall health or manage their diabetes more effectively. After all my reasearch I believe that this diet can be helpful but in the long term it may do more hard than good. By restricing certain foods seems like it would cause deficiencies in certain minerals and nutrients that you need. If you do decide to give it a try make sure you talk to your doctor first.
